Ambassador A. Martirosyan's visit to Armenian cemetery in Hyderabad

21 December, 2015

On December 21, Ambassador of Armenia to India Armen Martirosyan arrived in Hyderabad, where he visited Armenian cemetery of the second half of the 17th century along with the Pastor of Armenians in India Very  Rev. Fr. Zaven Yagichyan  and two representatives of the Armenian community of Kolkata. The cemetery is located in the old city's residential area and has recently been renovated by the state government. In the course of the reconstruction works, a stone wall was built up around the compound and the area of the cemetery, which is around 1200 sq.m, was landscaped. Around 40 tombstones have been preserved and are in fairly good condition. Some inscriptions on these tombstones are still legible. There is only one tombstone of a foreigner of Dutch origin.

During the visit to the cemetery the Armenian delegation was accompanied by the representatives of the government of Telangana state. Ambassador Martirosyan also had a meeting with journalist Asif Yar Khan, who published his article about the cemetery in the October 31st edition of the popular national daily newspaper "The Hindu". Armenian delegation expressed its gratitude to the state authorities for the restoration of the cemetery. Issues related to the maintenance of the cemetery and its future  were discussed with the state officials.
