Spitak Earthquake Remembrance Day observed at New Delhi

07 December, 2018

On December 7th, a commemoration event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Spitak earthquake was held at New Delhi’s Springdales School. The event was organised by the Armenian Cultural Centre NGO in collaboration with the school administration by the initiative of the Armenian Embassy at New Delhi.

The students of the Springdales school after the earthquake in December 1988 organised fundraising at city’s central squares and streets and donated the funds to those affected by the calamity.

The event was attended by the Ambassador of Armenia in India Armen Martirosyan, embassy staff, former Indian Ambassador to Armenia Suresh Babu, the Springdales School’s Director Jyoti Bose, representatives of the Armenian community in India and others. The function commenced with Charles Aznavour’s song ‘Pour toi Arménie’. The attendees observed a minute’s silence in the memory of the victims of the disaster, followed by the song ‘Moment of Peace’ performed by the school choir.

Ambassador Martirosyan delivered a welcome speech and expressed his immense gratitude to the school on behalf of the Armenian people. Ambassador Babu also shared his memories about the days of the disaster. Being a staff member of the Ministry of External Affairs of India in 1988, he was directly involved in the delivery of humanitarian aid from India to the disaster zone.

A short film was screened to raise awareness about Armenia and Armenian culture among school students. The President of the Armenian-Indian Cultural Centre Gayane Movsisyan briefed the gathering on some of the historical and cultural heritage of the Armenian people. As a token of gratitude, the embassy presented a high-quality reproduction of the painting titled ’Descent of Noah from Ararat’ by Hovhnnes (Ivan) Aivazovsky and the collection of books by William Saroyan.

A video conference was held between Springdales school and School named after Anania Shirakatsi, Yerevan to conclude the event. The students of the Armenian school also expressed their gratitude to the Indian school for helping Armenia three decades ago. The prospects of cooperation between the two schools were discussed during the conference.

The Memorial event was covered by leading Indian media outlets.
