Armenia is grateful to Indian friends for helping aftermath Spitak earthquake

24 January, 2019

On January 24, Ambassador of Armenia Armen Martirosyan presented a Certificate of Appreciation of the Ministry of emergency situations of the Republic of Armenia to the Director of Vivekananda International Foundation and former Deputy National Security Adviser of the Government of India Arvind Gupta for his valuable contribution to the organization of humanitarian aid from India after the devastating Spitak earthquake of 1988.

Serving as a diplomat of the Indian Embassy in the former Soviet Union at that time, Arvind Gupta arrived from Moscow to Armenia immediately after the catastrophe to inform his government of the most urgent needs in the earthquake zone. Based on his report, the government of India designed and effectively implemented assistance program.

Ambassador Martirosyan and Mr. Gupta also exchanged views on possible cooperation between Armenia and India in the field of disaster prevention and management.
