Ambassador of Armenia Unveils the Bust of Sir Catchick Paul Chater in Kolkata

08 September, 2017

On September 08, the bust of Sir Catchick Paul Chater was unveiled at La Martiniere School in Kolkata.

Khachik Pogose Astwachatoor, known in history as Sir Catchick Paul Chater, graduated La Martiniere School (founded in 1836) at the end of the 19th century. His subsequent life and career developed in Hong Kong, where he became one of the main developers and investors in the city. Sir Paul Chater, being one of the richest and most influential people in the region, was an ardent philanthropist.  Today, a number of famous streets and buildings in Hong Kong bear his name.

In 1910, La Martiniere School, finding itself in a difficult financial situation and being condemned to bankruptcy, turned to its alumni Khachik Pogose Astwachatoor for financial support. The generous entrepreneur did not only pay all the debts of the school, but also created a large fund, which supports the functioning and development of the school till date. To honour his contribution to the school, Sir Paul Chater's name has been included in the daily school prayer.

Bishop of Calcutta Rt. Rev. Ashoke Biswas, founder of the Armenian-Indian Friendship NGO Rananjay Anand, Family History Researcher Liz Chater, representatives of city municipality and Armenian community, and other guests participated at the event. Ex-martinian, former member of the Board of Acting Governors of the La Martiniere Schools and former Chairperson of the Armenian Church Committee of the Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth Sonia John financed the making of the bust. Ambassador Armen Martirosyan, who was the Chief Guest at the function, delivered a speech.
